Against a backdrop of political polarisation, disinformation and declining trust in institutions, democratic resilience is becoming an increasingly important challenge for cities across Europe.

While national politics is often becoming more polarised, cities can provide spaces for democratic innovation, participation and collaboration.

London and Berlin are particularly interesting examples of how cities can strengthen democratic resilience and build new relationships between institutions, citizens and civil society.

The fourth and final event of the London x Berlin series brings the dialogue to London and takes a broader look at the democratic challenges facing both cities.

Following previous discussions on housing, education and civil society, the event will explore:

— the cultural, social and institutional conditions that can strengthen democratic resilience
— how city governments can build stronger relationships with civil society
— how democratic participation can be broadened, including among younger generations
— the role of cities in responding to polarisation and declining trust
— what London and Berlin can learn from each other

The discussion will bring together perspectives from both sides of the Channel and ask how democratic institutions can remain open, resilient and connected to the communities they serve.
